Gold producers declare dispute with AMCU

Dispute referred to the CCMA

Johannesburg, 29 July 2013: The gold producers represented by the Chamber of Mines advise that they have declared a dispute with the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Workers Union (AMCU), and will refer the matter to the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) for mediation.

AMCU has rejected the gold producers' revised offer of a 5% increase in wages and benefits. The producers have indicated that they cannot accede to AMCU's demands, in respect of which AMCU has not moved at all in respect of its demands.

Says Dr Elize Strydom, chief negotiator for the gold producers, "The gold producers will seek to continue our engagement under the auspices of the CCMA in a constructive manner, with a view to concluding an agreement which will ensure the sustainability of the gold mining industry for the benefit of the employers, employees, our communities and the country as a whole."
