GOVERNMENT PERFORMANCE ENCOURAGING

11 August 2015

The Office of the ANC Chief Whip is pleased with government’s progress report regarding the implementation of the commitments announced in the State of the Nation Address at the beginning of this year. The government’s report factually paints an encouraging picture of an administration at work, on top of the situation and well on course to delivering on its electoral commitments and the goals of the ambitious National Development Plan.

At the heart of the NDP is the bold programme to create 11 million jobs by 2030 and radically reduce the levels of unemployment, poverty and inequality. President Zuma’s report, which frankly, clearly and comprehensively provides an update of government’s implementation process of its 9-point plan, illustrates great strides particularly in the areas of radical economic revitalisation and job creation.

We are pleased with the government’s swift interventions to address the threat of job losses in various sectors, particularly in the mining sector. Retrenchments pose a serious challenge to our economic growth and causes untold economic suffering to many families. The huge investments in the manufacturing sector, the development of black industrialists and youth economic development in particular, as well as stabilisation of power generation will indeed put us in good stead to meet the annual growth of 5% as envisaged by the NDP.

We commend the government, under the leadership of President Zuma, for this crucial public update – which takes people into confidence regarding what government has achieved and the work it is doing thus far to meet its commitments. This enhanced level of accounting is commendable and is truly consistent with the character of our democratic government – which is truly open, transparent and accountable.
