HESA deeply concerned by Johnny Molefe appointment

Choice of TUT VC casts negative image on higher education sectory

HESA STATEMENT ON THE APPOINTMENT OF THE VICE-CHANCELLOR AND PRINCIPAL AT TSHWANE UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY, August 5 2011

HESA hereby records that it has not been formally informed by Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) about the appointment of its new Vice Chancellor. We have taken note of the university's announcement in this regard, and note with deep concern the controversy surrounding the qualifications of the new Vice-Chancellor.

We are particularly concerned about the negative image the appointment casts on the higher education sector, especially the potential harm it can do to the credibility of higher education leadership in SA. We take the view that Councils are compelled to make appointments that enhance the integrity of institutions as well as that of the entire higher education system.

We also take note that from the TUT media statement it appears that the Minister of Higher Education and Training has had an engagement with the Council of TUT in this regard, which we trust will result in an outcome that restores the credibility of the Council of TUT as well as that of higher education leadership. HESA appeals to the TUT Council to take steps that enhance rather than diminish the roles of Vice Chancellors.
