26 Aug 2013

The Electoral Commission takes note of the contents of the report issued by Public Protector Adv. Thuli Madonsela earlier today. The report deals with the allegations of maladministration and corruption in the procurement of the Riverside Office Park, in Centurion, to accommodate its national office.

The commission thanks and commends the Public Protector for issuing the report and assures Adv. Madonsela of its continued respect for her office. As clearly indicated and noted, the current commissioners who were appointed in November 2011 following the expiry of the term of office of the previous commission, has fully cooperated with the Public Protector's investigation. The commission as currently constituted is fully committed to adhering to and implementing the remedial actions within the set timeframes.

Following the release of the report earlier today, the Vice-Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Mr Terry Tselane, indicated that this report will in no way affect the preparations for the 2014 elections (NPE). "Various election milestones have already been achieved by the Electoral Commission. Staff has been identified and trained and the focus now is on the November 2013 registration weekend," said Mr Tselane.

The Electoral Commission would like to give every assurance to political parties, the South African electorate and international partners that the commission remains committed to maintaining its high standards as a pre-eminent leader in electoral democracy. The commission is confident that preparations are sufficiently advanced, to yet again, successfully manage the forthcoming elections as soon as the President of South Africa, Jacob Zuma, proclaims the dates
