IFP pays tribute to cyclist Burry Stander

The IFP has received with sadness the news of the tragic passing of cyclist, Burry Stander, who was hit by a taxi last night.

IFP Spokesperson for Sport and Recreation, Mkhuleko Hlengwa MP, conveyed the IFP's condolences;

"On behalf of the IFP, I convey the most heartfelt condolences to the Stander family, Burry's wife and fellow cyclist, Cherise Taylor, the entire cycling community and all of his friends. We wish them strength during this trying and difficult time."

"Stander leaves behind a legacy that not only he and his family can be proud of but that the entire South Africa holds in deep admiration. His cycling credentials, from South Africa to Beijing to London, speak for themselves."

"The high levels of road deaths in South Africa are a cause for real concern. The IFP's also offers its condolences to all other families who have lost loved ones during this festive season due to road accidents," added Hlengwa.

In conclusion Hlengwa said; "Burry's death is a real blow to sport in general and cycling in particular. The loss of such a young life that had so much potential ahead of him is very sad. We salute Burry for having represented South Africa on the world stage on some many occasions, and for doing so with diligence and patriotic commitment. May he rest in peace."
