Directorate says two men shot and killed by police after crowd stoned Zamdela police station

Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) is investigating a number of incidents emanating from protests in Sasolburg, Free State

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) is investigating numerous incidents linked to recent public protests in Zamdela, Sasolburg. After receiving conflicting reports of deaths and injuries, the IPID sent investigators to establish the facts. Our investigators went to police stations as well as hospitals and clinics.

The following incidents were confirmed and are being investigated:

Deaths as a result of police action - Zamdela CAS 246/01/2013 and Zamdela CAS 265/01/2013

It is alleged that on Tuesday 22 January 2013 a group of members of the community threw stones at the Zamdela Police Station, causing damage to state property. The police shot at the group and two African males were shot.

They were taken to Metsimaholo Hospital for medical attention in a private vehicle. One died in the vehicle on the way to hospital. He was identified as 35 year old Pule Thulo.

The second person who was taken to hospital in the same private vehicle died at Metsimaholo Hospital. He was identified as 35 year old Joseph Magwa from Zamdela, Sasolburg.

Two case dockets of murder were opened. No arrests have been made.

Post mortems for both deceased will be held on 24 January 2013 in Bloemfontein. Investigations continue.

Attempted murder - Zamdela CAS 222/01/2013

It is alleged that on Tuesday 22 January 2013 a group of members of the community threw stones at the Zamdela Police Station, causing damage to state property. The police shot at the group and a 33 year old African male was shot and injured. He was taken to Metsimaholo Hospital where he is recovering.

A case docket of attempted murder was opened. No arrests have been made.
The investigation continues.

Attempted murder - Zamdela (docket not opened yet)

It is alleged that an off-duty policeman was attacked by a mob at his home in Zamdela. The policeman fired warning shots in the air and towards the crowd. It is alleged that one person was hit on the chest and was taken to Metsimaholo Hospital and then transferred to Kroonstad. This person is still being traced - he is also a suspect in the storming of the police station.

No arrests have been made. The investigation continues.
