ANC welcomes the government’s decision to approach International Court of Justice
30 December 2023
The African National Congress (ANC) commends the South African government’s decision to approach the International Court of Justice (ICJ) regarding the dire situation in Gaza arising from Israel’s illegal occupation of Palestine. The ICJ, also known as the World Court, is the principal judicial organ of the United Nations, tasked with settling legal disputes between states and providing advisory opinions on legal questions referred by the General Assembly, Security Council, or other UN organs and specialized agencies.
This decision signifies our nation’s unwavering commitment to justice, human rights, and the principles enshrined in international law. The ANC stands in solidarity with the South African government’s pursuit of justice through the appropriate international legal mechanisms. The decision to seek the intervention of the ICJ underscores the ANC’s dedication to uphold values of peace, justice, and human dignity.
We emphasize the importance of accountability for any violations of international law and stress the need for a comprehensive and fair investigation to determine responsibility. The ANC support initiatives that promote peace, respect for human rights, and the dignity of all people in pursuit of a just and better world.
