It’s time for devolution of police powers – AfriForum

Shocking crime stats prove it’s time for devolution of police powers

The shocking increase in crime in South Africa is clear proof that the SAPS under the leadership of Minister of Police, Bheki Cele, has failed dismally to enforce its mandate and it is time to devolve the SAPS’s powers.

The SAPS has been crippled by weak political leadership, corruption, a lack of training and a lack of accountability for far too long. It is clear that this situation can not be remedied at national level, as this would be akin to asking the wolf to watch the sheep.

While politicians like Cele continue to make empty promises, ordinary South Africans are being murdered and raped at alarming rates.

“Cele is obviously not fit for his position. He prioritises party politics over ensuring that the SAPS functions effectively. The minister has aso repeatedly shown that he does not understand the scope of his role by interfering in the SAPS’ operational aspects,” says Jacques Broodryk, AfriForum’s spokesperson for Community Safety.

“Unfortunately, just getting rid of Cele will not solve the problem at this stage. We have gone too far down this road. It is now time to devolve the SAPS’ powers so that this criminal mess can be cleaned up,” concludes Broodryk.

AfriForum also calls on members of the public to get involved with their local civilian safety structures to help ensure the safety of their communities.

AfriForum has 159 neighbourhood watches countrywide.
