Daily Sun (May 6 2014) - MANY GOOD people - men and women who put their values and those of their fellow human beings ahead of personal gain or comfort - died or suffered discomfort and pain in the struggle for our democracy.
Democracy . . . the right we now have in Mzansi to cast our vote for the political party of our choice. We give our mandate to party X or Y because we favour its plans and promises. And, really, we should cherish that right.
The word "democracy" originates from the Greek demokratía, "rule of the people", and it's the form of government in which eligible citizens participate equally, either directly or indirectly, in the proposal, development and creation of laws. It encompasses social, religious, cultural, ethnic and racial equality, justice, liberty and fraternity.
Of course, it can be frustrating to be a follower of one of the minority parties. But, whatever party you have voted for, your rights (and mine) are protected by our Constitution. And your ballot is a secret.
So, SunReaders, please go to the polls tomorrow in this country's fifth democratic election and exercise your right. You don't have to vote for anyone you have been told to vote for; you don't have to vote for the same party that your neighbour votes for. You should vote for the party that you have judged to be the one that can do the best for the country and for you.
