Jack Bloom displayed utter selfishness - Gauteng govt

DA MPL accused of displaying utter disregard for family of Thomas Ferreira

The Gauteng Provincial Government bemoans DA's conduct over Thomas Ferreira accident

23 Nov 2011

The Gauteng Provincial Government (GPG) is today saddened and disappointed by how DA member Jack Bloem dealt with the accident that landed matric pupil Thomas Ferreira in hospital on 5 November 2011.

Mr Bloem, speaking at the sitting of the provincial legislature, displayed complete selfishness when he sought to politicise Ferreira's accident, demonstrating utter disregard towards a family that is praying for their son's survival.

Mr Bloem stood up and claimed "the family of Thomas Ferreira is looking for answers from you the Premier of this province for what has happened".

This immature grandstanding came a few weeks after Premier Nomvula Mokonyane together with MEC Humphrey Mmemezi were the first people from government to visit the Ferreira family at their home in Krugersdorp. During that visit, government expressed its sincere regret at the accident and further committed to not only cooperate with investigations but also assist with Ferreira's medical care.

Additionally, the family made it very clear during that visit that they would appreciate if they could be given space to see their son back to health without the undue pressure of media enquiries and other public pronouncements.

Both the Premier and the MEC then took a decision to respect the family's wishes and not to involve themselves in the politicisation of the accident.

But Mr Bloem took it upon himself today to abuse the privileges of the house and bring the matter back to the public domain. It became clear to the Premier as she was being questioned by Mr Bloem that his objective had nothing to do with sympathising with the Ferreira family but rather aimed at scoring cheap political points over the accident.

We would like to reiterate to the public that we will not be dragged into the politicisation of the Thomas Ferreira accident. Instead we will continue to pray for his full recovery in hospital and that he eventually is reunited with his family.
