Joburg's OUTsurance pointsmen saved - DA

Mervyn Cirota says JMPD officers will man areas while pointsmen are trained as peace officers

OUTSURANCE POINTSMAN PROJECT IN JHB SAVED

Notwithstanding political indecisiveness, poor legal advice and incompetent planning it would appear that the very valuable and valued Outsurance project in Johannesburg has been rescued. Cllr Mervyn Cirota DA Shadow Member of the Mayoral Committee for Public Safety in the City of Johannesburg has congratulated the innovative and concerted intervention by senior officials within JMPD who at the final hour put forward proposals which have given this project a lifeline.

It is understood the City manager Mr. Fowler has or is about to agree to the following plan of action to rescue this project which provides essential employment for many pointsmen and which provides essentials traffic monitoring and control on our roads:

1. JMPD officials will man all areas where the pointsmen normally take up their duties until Monday the 7th November 2011.

2. JMPD will train all pointsmen during this week to allow them to be appointed Peace Officers and as such cure the legal restriction preventing them from being Pointsmen.

3. The pointsmen programme will be extended for a further four months to allow the tender process to take its normal course.

Cllr Cirota has expressed his dismay and disappointment that such an important community project was almost lost to the citizens of the city due to what appears to be due to the disinterested and incompetent approach taken by the MMC of Public Safety's office in handling this matter. The MMC was made aware of this problem some time ago and should have set the process in motion well before the deadline on Friday 28th November 2011.

The new MMC of Safety has yet again in the short space of only 5 months since her appointment been embroiled in controversy. What excuse will she give this time? When will the MMC take ownership of and responsibility for her position?
