AfriForum welcomes judgement regarding municipal election
3 September 2021
The civil rights organisation today welcomed the Constitutional Court’s judgement to not postpone the municipal election outside of the constitutional framework. This comes after the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) brought an application to postpone the municipal election to February 2022. This application was brought after a recommendation was made in a report handed to the IEC by former Deputy Justice Dikgang Moseneke.
According to Morné Mostert, Manager of Local Government Affairs at AfriForum, this is a victory for the protection of South African’s right to vote but will potentially have an impact on other rights within the Constitution. “Municipal service delivery is in a chaotic state and now the opportunity exists to change the composition of municipal councils. The municipal council’s primary function is to see to it that municipal officers are able to realise constitutional rights.
