Khayelitsha necklacings reflect distrust in police - FF+

Pieter Groenewald says Minister Nathi Mthethwa must urgently intervene

Distrust in Police creates anarchy

"The necklacing of alleged criminals in Khayelitsha the last two weeks by the community is a danger sign and creates anarchy. If members of the community say that they have lost all their trust in the Police and the criminal justice system and therefore would rather take the law in their own hands, it must serve as a wake-up call and be seen as a stain on the name of the Police. The minister of Police, Nathi Mthethwa, must urgently intervene," says Mr. Pieter Groenewald, FF Plus chief spokesperson on Police (see Cape Times report).

Luxolo Mpontshane (25), Mabhuti Matinise (20) and Sivuyile Rola (28) were killed two weeks ago because of the alleged theft of a plasma television set and last week three alleged criminals were killed with the necklace method because of the alleged theft of a generator at a church.

"The FF Plus will in parliament ask the minister which steps were taken to restore law and order and trust in the community of Khayelitsha," Groenewald said.
