Krugersdorp gang rape: Charges withdrawn – NPA

Apparent that there is insufficient evidence to proceed with the prosecution

NPA withdraws rape charges against men charged for Krugersdorp gang rape

27 October 2022

The National Prosecuting Authority decided to withdraw the charges of rape, sexual assault, and robbery with aggravating circumstances against all 13 men and a minor, who were all charged for the incident that happened on 28 July 2022, where eight women were allegedly gang-raped while filming a music video at a mine dump in Krugersdorp. The prosecution will however continue in the Krugersdorp Magistrates' Court in respect of charges of the contravention of the Immigration Act.

Upon consultation with the complainants in the matter, and evidential material currently at the disposal of the NPA, it became apparent that there is insufficient evidence to proceed with the prosecution. Prosecution-guided investigations will continue in pursuit of justice for all women affected by this heinous crime.

The case was postponed to 01 November 2022, for further investigations. All accused will remain in custody.
