Lockdown: Security beefed up at old age homes – Joburg

City says this follows report of break-in at retirement village in Eldorado Park

City of Johannesburg beefs up security at old age homes

1 April 2020

The office of the MMC for Housing, led by MMC Mlungisi Mabaso, would like to inform the residents of the City of Joburg that a private security company is in the process of being deployed to retirement/old age homes to ensure that they are safe during the Covid 19 pandemic and beyond.

This follows a report of a break-in at the Nancefield Retirement Village in Eldorado Park, South of Johannesburg, in the wee hours of Tuesday, 31st March 2020.

Fortunately, none of the elderly persons were injured during the incident. However, the perpetrators welded and damaged the burglar guard, before they could be apprehended by the neighbours and law enforcement agencies.

I would like to place on record that vulnerable residents remain one of our priorities, hence we are taking a decision to hire a private security company to ensure the safety of the City's elderly people.

We are currently in consultation with relevant authorities in the City and will soon communicate the date of commence when the private security company will be fully operational to provide a peaceful and well-guarded environment for the vulnerable.

We emphasize that the elderly remain one of the City's priorities and anybody who is found to be breaking the law, especially at the expense of the elderly, will be dealt with and will face the full might of the law.
