ANC called national government to help
The ANC Western Cape has called on Sanral to stop the evictions of people at the Nomzano settlement on land designated for building a public road. The ANC also called national Human Settlements Minister Lindiwe Sisulu and Transport Minister Dipuo Peters this afternoon to the site for help where brutal incidents of forceful removals took place during the past two days.
The ANC strongly condemns the cruel and uncaring City of Cape Town as it once more ran away from its responsibilities and tries to pass the bucket.
ANC Western Cape secretary Songezo Mjongile says: "Instead of pursuing solutions in the spirit of cooperative governance, the irresponsible Cape Town was not assisting. It instead sowed suspicion and played politics with the lives and conditions of people. The city refused to help the people before, flat-out turned down various offers (which still stand) to obtain alternative land for resettlement, neglected the provision of services by refusing to maintain even basic services and withdrawn from working with Sanral (a national agency) going back to 2003 on this Nomzano matter.
"The City in writing on 31 August 2011 pulled out of the process and discontinued negotiations to find amicable solutions to relocate the people occupying the public land needed for the road. To muddle matters even further the DA now uses the toll road issue as a scapegoat excuse, but fails to admit that it indeed prevented the buying of alternative land for the people staying on that tract needed for the road.
"Once more the DA is unmasked for its politics of deception, shifting blame and lying to people. From the time the court granted an interdict earlier this year, neither the city nor the DA run province lifted a finger. The ANC now had to ask national government to intervene and bring reprieve for our people as the DA in Cape Town and the province only cares about the rich in the affluent areas."
