Makgoba must resist urge to privatize Eskom – EFF

Fighters list six things new interim Board Chair must do to save SOE from total disintegration

EFF notes the appointment of Makgoba as interim Board Chair of Eskom

16 January 2020

The EFF notes the appointment of Professor MalegapuruMakgoba as the interim Board

Chairperson of Eskom. It is important to underscore that this appointment comes when the

power utility is under the greatest threat of privatization ever. We call on Professor Makgoba

to resist this effort in all and any of its manifestations. The developmental needs of our

country require a power utility that is not used for private profiteering.

Professor Makgoba must work hard to do the following if he is to save Eskom from total

disintegration in private capital interests and benefit:

1. Cancel the irrational power purchase agreements.
2. Disengage with IPPs.
3. Stop any attempt to unbundle the utility.
4. Build Eskom renewal energy division.
5. Investigate the delays on the completion of Kusile and Medupi.
6. Make sure that all coal prices are consistent with NERSA set prices.

He will be judged based on these important goals; under his watch, he must ensure that Eskom remains, in its entirety, a people's asset.

Finally, we reiterate our call on Ramaphosa to remove Pravin Gordhan from the cabinet of South Africa. The man is a central source of white monopoly capital in its efforts to consolidate its absolute capture of SOEs for their greedy and private interests.
