Manketsi Tlhape wrong choice for local govt MEC - SAMWU

Union says former Tswaing mayor was a disaster in that position

Premier of North West take Local Gov seriously!

The South African Municipal Workers (SAMWU) in the North West Province is calling on the African National Congress (ANC) Provincial Leadership, in particular the Premier Thandi Modise to take affairs of Local Government seriously.

As a Union we fail to understand the rational behind appointing Manketsi Tlhape as MEC for Local Government.

We want to state on record that as SAMWU we do not support the Deployment of Manketsi Tlhape as the MEC for local government due to the following reasons;

She dismally failed to run a small municipality called Tswaing for more than four years. The Municipality was put under administration because of her poor leadership.

During her tenure as a Mayor at the Tswaing Local Municipality workers were not paid on time, their salaries were delayed which resulted in massive third party deductions. These monthly deductions were made but not paid over to various service providers.

At one point Eskom threatened to switch off the electricity at the Institution. Fortunately the situation was rescued by a person who was appointed to administer the Institution.

It is not correct to appoint a person who has dismally failed to run a small Municipality and elevate her to a senior and a highly demanding position.

Almost all municipalities in the Province are on the verge of collapse due to the following;

  • Factional battles
  • Poor/lack of financial Management, resulting in municipalities failing financial audits.
  • On-going and unending corruption
  • Total disregard and deliberate ignorance to existing labour Legislations
  • Poor and or lack of progress in municipalities put under administration.

We call on the Premier, as head of Governance in the Province to take a bold stand and review the decision of appointing Manketsi Tlhape as the MEC for Local Government.

This appointment will exacerbate the downward spiral of bad working conditions of workers in the sector and poor service delivery in our communities.
