Marikana was a tragedy - ANC NEC

Special NEC appeals to all South Africans not to use tragedy for opportunistic purposes

SPECIAL ANC NEC STATEMENT

The African National Congress national Executive met today at a planned special NEC meeting to consider reports on local government and its performance.  This follows the completion of the ANC's internal monitoring report and the recent Auditor General's report. Both report had highlighted areas considered to be posing a challenge in the composition and functioning of local government. Both the ANC and it's government will be seized with the weaknesses that have been identified at that level of government.

The special NEC meeting also discussed the Marikana tragedy after receiving a report from the NEC members who are deployed by government to assist those affected.  After discussions, the NEC expressed a collective view that this was tragedy. It also expressed its collective condolences to the families of those deceased.  The NEC has also wished a speedy recovery to those who were injured.  It also expressed its support for the Judicial Commission of Enquiry and as well as the composition of the inter-Ministerial Committee by government. The Special NEC appeals to all South Africans that nobody must use the tragedy for political and opportunistic reasons.
