Mathews Phosa is not conspiring against Mabuza - ANC

Jackson Mthembu rejects claims that treasurer general is funding Mpumalanga protests

ANC STATEMENT ON ALLEGATIONS OF AN ANC NEC MEMBER FUNDING AND FUELING PROTESTS IN MPUMALANGA

The ANC would like to dismiss with contempt spurious allegations made by a Raymond Makamo that an ANC NEC Member in the name of Cde Mathews Phosa, the Treasurer General of the ANC, is funding and fueling service delivery protests in Mpumalanga.

We are even more shocked and infuriated by allegations from the same person to the effect that an NEC member again in the name of our Treasurer General has paid journalist, particularly Mzilikazi  Wa Africa, to write negative stories about Mpumalanga province and the ANC Premier there, Cde DD Mabuza (see report). These allegations by Makamo are without any basis and in our view are meant to tarnish the good name and image of our Treasurer General.

If Mr Makamo, who is a member of the ANC, believes in the allegations he has made in the Ligwalagwala radio station over the past two days ( Monday, the 8th  and Tuesday, the 9th of February 2010), he could have approached the Provincial ANC leadership and even the National ANC leadership on the matter.

The failure of Mr Makamo to substantiate his allegations in the Ligwalagwala radio station, his failure to also approach the ANC on such serious allegations regarding its Treasurer General, can only be interpreted as an attempt on his part to bring the ANC and its leadership into disrepute.  The ANC will then deal with this matter in a manner consistent with its constitution.

Statement issued by Jackson Mthembu, African National Congress national spokesperson, February 10 2010
