Mathole Motshekga's tribute to Winkie Direko

ANC Chief Whip says late FState premier was a compassionate and committed public servant

TRIBUTE TO MME WINKIE DIREKO

22 February 2012

The Chief Whip of the Majority Party in Parliament, Dr Mathole Motshekga, has extended his heartfelt condolences and sympathies to the family, friends and comrades of the late former Member of Parliament and Premier of the Free State, Mama Winkie Direko. She passed away on Friday, aged 82.

Dr Motshekga said he was deeply saddened by the passing of Mama Direko, who he worked closely with in both government and the ANC, particularly during their tenure as premiers of Gauteng and the Free State respectively. She also represented the ANC in Parliament, first as a permanent delegate in the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) between from 1996-1999, and later as a member of the National Assembly from 2004-2009.

"It is painful to lose a stalwart of such highest calibre, a truly compassionate, committed and courageous servant. She surrendered her life to the service of the country and cared deeply about the welfare of the people she served. For us who had the privilege of working closely with her, she was our elder, a mother from whom we learned a great deal. We shall always remember and be guided by her political wisdom and discipline, which were the hallmarks of her service to the people" - said Dr Motshekga.
