PREMIER WON'T REVEAL BLUE LIGHT DESTINATION

Gauteng Premier Nomvula Mokonyane today refused to reveal where Local Government MEC Humphrey Mmemezi was rushing to on 5 November when his vehicle knocked down 18- year-old Thomas Ferreira in Krugersdorp while flashing Blue Lights. This was in reply to my questions in the Gauteng Legislature.

She would not confirm or deny that Local Government MEC Humphrey Mmemezi was going to an ANC political school meeting in Soweto, an allegation provided to me by a source. She said that she had been briefed on the incident, and there was a logbook that would be part of the investigation being conducted; the process should be allowed to proceed.

I am disappointed that the premier ducks a simple answer to the simple question of where MEC Mmemezi was headed on that fateful day. We should not have to await the outcome of an investigation to get this information. Mokonyane should follow the lead of the Western Cape Provincial Government that has banned the use of Blue Lights by provincial ministers.

There is rampant abuse of Blue Lights in this province, and it should be curbed without excuses.
