Mokonyane right to call for more funds for Gauteng - Jack Bloom

DA MPL says census has revealed a large population increase, but additional funds should be properly spent

DA SUPPORTS PREMIER'S CALL FOR MORE GAUTENG FUNDS

The Democratic Alliance supports Gauteng Premier Nomvula Mokonyane's call for National Treasury to allocate extra money to Gauteng in view of the large increase in population as revealed by the Census.

The population strain is felt particularly with education and health.

It is vital, however, that the extra money is spent effectively and efficiently.

Infrastructure money has had to be returned to the Treasury in the past because it was not spent.

Financial mismanagement continues in many departments, with lots of waste and misspending, as revealed in the latest Auditor-General's report on the province.

It's profoundly shameful that national treasury officials had to be called in to save the Gauteng Health Department.

Mokonyane should ensure that all incompetent political appointees are removed and replaced with people who can do the job.

Extra money will only help if it is spent properly.
