New appointments in Parliament

5 May 2016

The Office of the ANC Chief Whip in Parliament announces new deployments to parliamentary committees to fill existing vacancies and strengthen their capacity to fulfil their oversight functions. The vacancies within several National Assembly committees were created primarily by the redeployment of the previous incumbents to new responsibilities both within and outside Parliament.

The new appointments, which will only become effective after being duly elected by the respective committees, are as follows:

1. Cde PINKIE PHOSA, who was previously the chairperson of the higher education and training portfolio committee, becomes the new chairperson for the standing committee on appropriations. The position was previously held by Cde Paul Mashatile, who is now the MEC for human settlements in the Gauteng Provincial Government.

2. Cde CONNIE SEPTEMBER, who previously chaired the joint standing committee on intelligence, becomes the new chairperson for the portfolio committee on higher education and training

3.  Cde CHARLES NQAKULA, a veteran MP, becomes the new chairperson for the joint standing committee on intelligence.

4. Cde HUMPHREY MAXEGWANA, previously the whip for the agriculture, forestry and fisheries portfolio committee, becomes the new chairperson for the communications portfolio committee. The position was previously held by Cde Joyce Moloi-Moropa, who resigned as MP recently to focus on her responsibilities as SACP national treasurer on fulltime basis.

5. Cde PHILLEMON MAPULANE becomes the new chairperson for the portfolio committee on environmental affairs. The position was previously held by Cde Jackson Mthembu, who is now ANC chief whip in Parliament

6.  Cde PULE MABE becomes the new Whip for the finance portfolio committee. The position was previously held by Cde Des Van Rooyen, who is now minister for cooperative governance and traditional affairs.

The Office of the ANC Chief Whip congratulates the new appointees and wish them well in their responsibilities. We once again thank the comrades who previously held these positions for the excellence and dedication with which they served.

We have no doubt that the new changes will further reinforce parliament’s oversight role over the executive and enhance quality service delivery to the people of South Africa.
