New Jozini Mayor must probe tender irregularities – Zwakele Mncwango

DA says people of the are have witnessed an enormous increase in corruption under the ANC

DA urges new Jozini Mayor to probe tender irregularities

16 September 2016

The DA in KwaZulu-Natal welcomes the election of new leadership in Jozini Council after weeks of failed meetings caused by the deliberate absence of ANC councillors.

We have today written to the new Mayor, Delani Mabika, calling for an immediate investigation into the awarding of tenders in this municipality.

The people of Jozini have witnessed an enormous increase in corruption under the ANC, with a forensic investigation by Deloitte revealing irregularities in tenders for solar mast lights. There has also been the questionable awarding of a contract to OPMS and the over-expenditure on renovations made to community halls two years ago.

These and other irregularities cost the municipality, one of the poorest in the country, over R90 million. This is money that should have rather been spent on service delivery and programmes which boost job creation.

The DA also calls for a skills audit to be conducted in the municipality. This will ensure that the municipality is in the capable hands of people who are qualified to do their work. We have also asked for a meeting with the new Mayor to discuss issues affecting the municipality.

We will closely monitor the new government of Jozini. The ANC was defeated today and the people of Jozini can breathe a sigh of relief because rest assured, corruption will be rooted out in the municipality.
