No to Cape Town Airport name change – FF Plus

Corné Mulder says there are other ways of commemorating historical figures

FF Plus opposed to EFF suggestion to change name of Cape Town Airport

Using the names of people to name places, like airports, is a contentious topic that always leads to unnecessary disagreements due to differing opinions and, therefore, the FF Plus prefers using geographical names.

If a person's name must be used to rename a place like Cape Town's Airport then it would be best to use a meaningful name. Thus, the FF Plus is very strongly opposed to using the name of Winnie Madikizela-Mandela.

In the case of the Western Cape, the indigenous or the First People of the province must be honoured. These people are also a minority group in South Africa.

Thus, it makes sense that the name should be Krotoa. She is a historical Cape figure who is considered to be the mother of South Africa's Khoi tribes. In this way, the First People of our country will be commemorated.

Even so, it is preferable to use geographical names. There are other ways of commemorating historical figures.
