NUM condemns kidnapping of girls in Nigeria

Union calls on the whole world to fight the barbarians responsible

NUM condemn Nigeria Kidnappings

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) is outraged and disgusted that 223 girls are still missing after being abducted in the North Eastern town of Chibok, in Nigeria on April 14 have not been found.

NUM is also concerned that 11 more girls had been kidnapped last week on Sunday.

It is pure barbarism the kidnapping of these innocent girls. The NUM calls on the whole world to fight these barbarians who are trying to block children's access to education. It is saddening that religion is misused to terrorise people and kidnap the future leaders of the world.

NUM will not allow a situation were young girls are enslaved and we demand the girls be returned to their families.

"We urge our South African government, religious groups, Cosatu and NGOs to join forces and support the affected families. We need to internalise their pain, and just imagine if it was your child being kidnapped," said NUM General Secretary Frans Baleni.
