NUM supports Zuma's call for normality in mining sector

Union states however that strike action shouldn't cease to be a last resort if wage negotiations fail

NUM supports the call for normality in the mining sector

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) has noted the comments by the Honourable President of the Republic JG Zuma in his address to the media yesterday. The NUM concurs that there is a need for normality in Centralised Bargaining processes. That normality must be brought by parties ‘s adherence to the rules of collective bargaining, mutual respect and non-violent means of engagement.  The NUM calls on all parties including mining companies to play by established rules. "As a union we are determined to play by the very same rules we want others to play by" says Frans Baleni, the NUM General Secretary.

Playing by the rules does not however mean that as unions we should not be determined to demand what is fair for our own members. It also shouldn't be interpreted to mean that strike action would cease to be the last resort as we normally do when parties are unable to agree. The NUM fully support the President's call for stability and appeals on all parties to abide by the peace accord signed earlier in the year.
