Nyako Masenya murdered in Limpopo - Agang SA

Party says activist had taken a break from branch meeting when assailant struck

AgangSA Condemns the Murder of its Member in Limpopo

Johannesburg, 6 October 2013: AgangSA learned with shock of the brutal murder of its member who was attending the launch of the party's branch in Uitkyk, Bochum, in Limpopo, this afternoon. The village is the family home of the party's leader, Dr Mamphela Ramphele.

Although details are still sketchy at the moment - including the motive - we can confirm that Nyako Masenya, who was wearing an AgangSA T-shirt, had taken a break from the meeting to visit the local shop, when the assailant struck.  He was apparently hit with rocks and a plank found at the scene. The killer is well-known in the area.

Thabo Leshilo, Communications Director said:

"We hope this is not a reflection of how political intolerance is finding increasing expression in our society. We live in a constitutional democracy where citizens have the right to a choice of political allegiance and have a right to freedom of expression, have a right to dignity and to hold whatever views they hold without having to fear that such views may endanger their very lives.

"Our thoughts are with the family at this trying time. We urge the police to act urgently and to leave no stone unturned in their investigation of the cowardly murder of an unarmed man, and for any witnesses to help them bring the perpetrator to book, so that justice can prevail.

"We would also urge the IEC to pay attention to the increasing reports of violence stemming from political intolerance if we are to have free and fair elections. Citizens should feel they will be defended by the institutions of our constitutional democracy set up for that purpose."

Dr Ramphele appeals to the community of Uitkyk and AgangSA members in the area to respect the rule of law and let justice take its course.
