Our demands and ANCYL's identical - COSATU

Federation explains why it supports economic freedom marches in principle

COSATU and the Youth League marches

Having noted media reports about COSATU's stance on the ANC Youth League's Marches for Economic Freedom, scheduled for 27 and 28 October 2011, the National Office Bearers wish to clarify COSATU's position, which is:

1. COSATU supports the demands which the ANCYL will be making in the marches, as they are demands which are identical to those the federation itself is making;

2. COSATU therefore supports the marches in principle, as we would support any other organisations of the oppressed who are campaigning peacefully for a better life for workers, the youth and the poor;

3. The Youth League has requested a meeting with COSATU, and a decision on our involvement in the specific marches will be taken after this meeting between the federation and the Youth League.

Statement issued by Patrick Craven, COSATU national spokesperson, October 20 2011
