PA wins seat off DA in George - IEC

IFP wins seat off ANC in KZN, holds one, DA and ANC retain two seats

Results of the Municipal by-election held on 14 February 2024

In the by-elections contested on 14 February 2024 in the Free State, Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, North West and the Western Cape provinces, the African National Congress (ANC) retained its two seats and lost a seat in another municipality. The Democratic Alliance (DA) also retained two seats and lost a seat in another municipality. The Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) retained a seat and also won a seat. The Patriotic Alliance (PA) won a seat in the Western Cape. 

The new ANC councillors are:

Aaron Tsietsi Macio, in Ward 11 in the Nala Municipality, FS185, Free State. The party retained the seat it won in the 2021 Municipal Elections, with 53,04% of the total votes cast, compared to 56,74% during the 2021 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout was 51,07%.

Levy Ramatlhape, in Ward 07 in the Madibeng Municipality, NW373, North West. The party retained the seat it won in the 2021 Municipal Elections, with 80,33% of the total votes cast, compared to 68,48% during the 2021 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout was 32,46%.

The new DA councillors are:

Martha Hendrina Beukes, in Ward 25 in the Ekurhuleni Municipality, EKU, Gauteng. The party retained the seat it won in the 2021 Municipal Elections, with 87,15% of the total votes cast, compared to 69,72% during the 2021 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout was 20,96%.

Johnathan Smit, in Ward 10 in the Theewaterskloof Municipality, WC031, Western Cape. The party retained the seat it won in the 2021 Municipal Elections, with 28,42% of the total votes cast, compared to 50,94% during the 2021 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout was 46,04%.

The new IFP councillor are:

Vusumuzi Reaan Buthelezi, in Ward 02 in the Uphongolo Municipality, KZN262, KwaZulu-Natal. The party retained the seat it won in the 2021 Municipal Elections, with 36,39% of the total votes cast, compared to 48,37% during the 2021 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout was 50,14%.

Ntokozo Innocent Mdluli, in ward 11, Newcastle Municipality – KZN252, KwaZulu-Natal. The party won a seat previously won by the ANC in the 2021 Municipal Elections, with 49,75% of the total votes cast compared to 38,11% during the 2021 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 52,26%.

The new PA councillor is:

Samuel Christie Vorster, in ward 08, George Municipality – WC044, Western Cape. The party won a seat previously won by the DA in the 2021 Municipal Elections, with 62,75% of the total votes cast compared to 36,63% during the 2021 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 54,29%.
