Parks Tau confident of his innocence - Joburg

Mayor refers allegations of tender impropriety against himself and his wife to Public Protector

JOBURG MAYOR CONFIDENT ABOUT HIS INNOCENCE

The Executive Mayor, Councilor (Clr) Mpho Parks Tau announced today (Sun Oct 7) that he has decided to refer media allegations of tender impropriety to the Integrity Commissioner of the City of Johannesburg and the Public Protector (see Mail & Guardian report).

"I am confident of my innocence from impropriety. It is important that when such allegations arise, we should subject ourselves to scrutiny. My decision to refer this matter to public enquiry has been motivated by this approach," said Clr Tau.

He said allegations about his wife Philisiwe and himself published in last Friday media, have been referred to institutions of government tasked with the mandate to investigate such issues.

"We will fully-cooperate with the investigation and provide all necessary information to help to clarify the matter to all those concerned," added Clr Tau.

He called on anyone who can help with relevant information to assist the probe by forwarding such information relevant authorities. "It is important for leadership in public office to submit to scrutiny so that they can measure up to building good governance and inspire confidence among communities who elected politicians to serve them," concluded Clr Tau.
