ANC GAUTENG ANNOUNCES MAYORS

The ANC Gauteng Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) met in a special meeting yesterday to conduct a preliminary assessment of the outcome of the 2011 local government elections.

The PEC is satisfied with the electoral performance of the ANC in the townships and informal settlements throughout Gauteng where voters turned out in large numbers to vote overwhelmingly for the ANC.  The ANC has maintained its support among the overwhelming majority of the poor and working class in the African townships and informal settlements.

The PEC was particularly pleased with the substantial gains made in 13 winning wards from the opposition in Ekurhuleni (ward 12, 13, 42, 74 and 93), West Rand (Mogale ward 16, Randfontein ward 5, Westonaria ward 4, Merafong ward 12, 16 & 18) and Johannesburg (wards 47, 61 and 124).

The PEC appreciated that although we did not win wards in the northern suburbs of Johannesburg and eastern suburbs of Tshwane, the ANC's support is growing in these communities. Thorough organisational and political work will be done in the next three years to create the ANC's presence in these areas.

The PEC expressed disappointment with the ANC performance in the Indian and Coloured townships in Johannesburg. We will be going back to the drawing board with regard to our work among these communities.

With regard to the appointment of Mayors, all the RECs made recommendations of three names to the PEC in order of priority or preference in accordance with the resolution of the 52nd National Conference.  After careful consideration, the PEC has appointed the following comrades as the ANC's Mayoral Candidates to be elected in the Council sittings this week:

1) City of Johannesburg - Cde Parks Tau;

2) Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality - Cde Mondli Gungubele;

3) City of Tshwane - Cde Kgosientsho Ramokgopa;

4) West Rand District Municipality - Cde Mpho Nawa;

5) Sedibeng District Municipality - Cde Simon Mofokeng;

6) Emfuleni Local Municipality - Cde Greta Hlongwane;

7) Mogale City Local Municipality - Cde Calvin Seerane;

8) Merafong City Local Municipality - Cde Maphefo Letsie;

9) Randfontein Local Municipality - Cde Sylvia Thebenare;

10) Lesedi Local Municipality - Cde Lerato Maloka;

11) Westonaria Local Municipality - Cde Nonkoliso Tundzi;

Six men and six women were identified and unanimously agreed by the PEC and subsequently endorsed by the National Officials as the mayoral candidates for all the twelve Gauteng municipalities. With regard to the Midvaal, Cde Priseka Ramushu, who was our mayoral candidate, will be the leader of the opposition in this municipality.

All the municipalities will meet in the next two days to elect Council Speakers and Mayors. The mayors will subsequently appoint the Members of their Mayoral Committees. The ANC's gender policy will be adhered in all municipalities governed by the ANC.

All newly-elected ANC councilors have been instructed to immediately focus on the implementation of the ANC Manifesto.

The ANC is determined to hit the ground running and no time will be wasted in putting in place new councils. It's all-systems go!
