Phiyega: Portfolio committee's actions perturbing - POPCRU

Union says it has never been a crime to for anyone to stand out and declare their support for their seniors

POPCRU PERTURBED AT PARLIAMENTARY POLICE COMMITTEE ACTIONS

13 August 2015

The Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (POPCRU finds it unsettling that the Parliamentary Police Committee would go to such extremes in raising their dissatisfaction with the South African Police senior officers.

We are indeed dismayed by the reaction from the Parliamentary Police Committee in that it creates an erroneous impression and seemingly seems to seek to label the National Police Commissioner as being guilty.

It has never been a crime to for anyone to stand out and declare their support for their seniors, an established culture within the South African socio-political discourse, especially so because they are not even the jury which should adjudicate over the matter in hand.

Many leaders have in the past been through trying times and their subordinates would declare support, yet it has never been an issue of contention.

We are of the view that the principle of being innocent until proven guilty is being undermined, and this could as well border around intentions of making the National Commissioner a scapegoat.

We have no reason whatsoever to support the call for the removal of anyone.
