Mayor welcomes Premier Winde’s State of the Province Address
16 February 2023
‘We are particularly excited at the energy interventions the Premier announced, with a massive R1 billion allocation for protection against load-shedding. The prospect of schools becoming more energy resilient through solar PV installations, is welcome news. This means schools can be paid cash for power as part of the City’s plans to buy excess power from businesses, residents, and small-scale embedded generators,’ said Mayor Hill-Lewis.
The Mayor welcomed Premier Alan Winde’s continued championing of devolution of policing authority to the provincial government.
‘The City and Province are already showing what is possible with more policing powers. Together our LEAP initiative has deployed 1 200 new officers to crime hotspots around the city. These officers are taking guns and drugs off the streets every day, and can do even more with investigative powers to build prosecution-ready case dockets to secure convictions,’ said Mayor Hill-Lewis.
The Mayor further welcomed Premier Winde’s commitments to continued partnerships on social housing project delivery, with the City supporting ground-breaking projects such as Conradie Park, which will deliver 3 500 units in total. The City and Province are also looking to unlock social housing at the two well-located CBD properties which were subject to orchestrated building hi-jackings in 2017.
