Rhino poaching update
14 May 2014
South Africa and Mozambique have identified a number of projects to assist with the implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in the field of Biodiversity Conservation and Management signed on 17 April 2014.
Representatives from the two countries have concluded a draft of the Implementation Plan that will put into action the areas of cooperation identified in the MoU. It is hoped that the Implementation Plan will be finalised and signed by the end of July 2014.
Discussions have started on fundraising projects to address the scourge of rhino poaching, wildlife trafficking in general, community development issues and raise awareness about the plight of the rhino. Talks have also been held regarding the strengthening of enforcement mechanisms to ensure rhino poaching is nipped in the bud.
The meeting between the two countries following the signing of the MoU came as the number of rhino poached for their horn since the beginning of 2013 increased to 376.
