Police investigating defacing of Paul Kruger statue – Anton Alberts

FF Plus MP says incitement by the EFF leadership led directly to the attack

Police busy with investigation into damaging of Paul Kruger statue

The Police has confirmed that the complaint which the FF Plus has lain last week at the Brooklyn Police Station in Pretoria against the leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), Julius Malema, the EFF’s spokesperson Mbuyiseni Ndlozi and its deputy chairperson in Tshwane, Moafrika Mabongwana will be investigated and that a detective has already been appointed to lead the investigation.

Adv. Anton Alberts, FF Plus MP and provincial leader in Gauteng had laid the complaint.

According to Adv. Alberts, the relevant EFF members had incited people to deface or break down “colonial statues which remind of apartheid” and this directly led to the damaging of Pal Kruger’s statue on Church Square. The EFF late accepted responsibility for it.

The complaint which was submitted was based on the breaking of the National Heritage Resources Act.

“It is encouraging to see that South Africans can still call on the protection of a legislative framework and the police should be commended for its quick response.

“The law should be enforced rigorously to firmly address criminal behaviour such as the EFF had displayed here. The EFF should accept that it is functioning within a constitutional democracy and is not above the law,” Adv. Alberts said.
