Police won't hesitate when confronted by criminals - POPCRU

Union says it is exasperated by continued killing of police officers

Police will not hesitate when confronted by criminals

11 September 2015

The Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (POPCRU) is exasperated by the continued killings of Police, with the latest victims being Constable BF Maluleke and Warrant Officer Mchizama who were stationed at the Moroka Police Station in Soweto.

These well-orchestrated deeds border around instilling fear in those entrusted with defending the public, and play into the hands of private security firms as an agenda driven by right-wing elements like Afri-Forum who continue to  publicly ridicule our police services in the public domain, all in their quest to justify the limitless guns they continue to possess.

We want to assure the public that this predilection will come to an abrupt end, and encourage improved community-police relations in the reduction and combat of these ills that seek to undermine our democratic gains. Through working together, police killings and any form of brutality will not go unnoticed and should be decisively dealt with.

We call on the government to prioritise this matter as one police killing is one too many, and look into the long-term solutions by way of addressing the socio-economic conditions most South Africans find themselves as they are part of the root causes for the current conditions.

We can no longer give lip-service to this atrocity. Police must continue to act decisively when confronted with such elements who disregard the rights of others to life.
