Announcement of the new Transnet Group Chief Executive

The Transnet Board is pleased to announce the appointment of Ms Portia Derby as the new Transnet Group Chief Executive, who will take up the position on 1 February 2020.

Portia has been appointed on the recommendation of the Transnet Board and with the support of Cabinet. Her appointment comes after a rigorous and extensive search.

Portia has a long history of service to South Africa. She is a dynamic leader with experience in the public and private sectors. Portia served as the Director General of the Department of Public Enterprises from 2005 to 2009. She acted as the Chief Operating Officer of the Department of Trade and Industry and has served on various boards, including the Board of Metair Investment and SAFCOL. She holds an Honours Degree in Economics from the University of KZN and an MBA from the University of the Witwatersrand.

The Board believes that Portia brings the insights, experience and competence to lead Transnet.

The Transnet Board wishes to thank Mohammed Mahomedy who has been the Acting Group Chief Executive since May 2019. Mohammed has served Transnet with distinction and the Board acknowledges the contribution he has made to the organisation.

Mohammed has been asked to return to the position of Acting Chief Financial Officer and Mark Greg-MacDonald will serve as the Acting Group Treasurer.

Portia’s appointment brings certainty to Transnet. Transnet will announce appointments of a number of other executives shortly. Portia will be playing a key role in leading the revival of Transnet. I urge you to offer your full support to Portia Derby.
