PPS: Personnel recruited from the SAPS - Parliament

Candidates who met the requirements and accepted employment have resigned from the police

STRENGTHENING THE CAPACITY OF THE PARLIAMENTARY PROTECTION SERVICES

Parliament, Thursday 6 August 2015 - The National Assembly (NA) last week approved new Rules for dealing with disruptions during its proceedings.

In the main, the new Rules clarify procedures for the removal of Members who refuse to comply with National Assembly Rule 51. The new Rules are applicable with immediate effect.

The Rules create a role for the Parliamentary Protection Services (PPS) in the removal of a Member. This requirement has made it necessary to strengthen the capacity of the PPS.

During deliberations in the NA Rules Committee, various suggestions were made regarding this matter. These suggestions were duly considered and personnel have been recruited from the South African Police Services.

The process has included interviews and screening of the relevant personnel. The candidates who met the requirements were offered employment and those who accepted have since resigned from the Police Service. All members of the Parliamentary Protection Services are Parliamentary employees.
