Budget Vote: Labour

10 May 2016

Speech by

Ian Ollis MP

DA Shadow Minister of Labour

Minister Oliphant’s political protectionism will derail our economy”

Speech highlights:

The political protection of officials who have been proven to be corrupt within labour unions by Minister Oliphant only increases the inefficiency of her department and Cosatu, to the detriment of the workers.

Minister Oliphant has not accounted brought to account Ceppwawu officials for breaking regulations governing trade unions including failing to submit audited financial statements three years in a row.

The newly formed Workers Association Union does not adhere to legislation regulated trade unions and is reportedly President Zuma’s personal experiment to resuscitate dying Cosatu.

The DA’s plan is to create jobs to increase employment equity results, fix bottlenecks in legislation to make it easy for companies to transform and grow black skills base.

Michael Bagraim MP

DA Shadow Deputy Minister of Labour

"No man's life, liberty or property is safe while the legislation is in session"

Speech highlights:

Minister Oliphant has been aloof and absent in the disastrous situation at the Compensation Fund and the numerous labour protest that have held the country ransom in recent months.

The ANC government has let the Compensation Fund implode to the extent that for four months no payments were made at all exposing South Africans to both poverty and degradation.

South Africans need the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) to be efficiently process massive queues, lost papers and avoid every excuse in the book provided in order to not have to pay.

The Labour Department must try to ensure there is an enabling environment for job creation and must move away from a plethora of stringent labour laws, regulations and red tape.
