COSATU welcomes the provision of services to backyarders
COSATU welcomes the provision of services to the backyarders in Fractreton. This was an important issue raised during the elections by the Mayoral candidate supported by COSATU.
It was Tony Ehrenreich who championed the provision of services to backyarders during the election campaign. We congratulate the maturity of the Mayor in implementing a good idea and an important area of services, no matter who had the ideas first. This principle must however also be extended to private property, as this is where many other backyarders reside. The informal housing should also get more humane facilities as a matter of urgency
This roll out is important in providing the services to communities, who will not be getting homes in the short term. COSATU would however caution the City from rolling it out in a racially based manner and calls on the Mayor to focus on all areas across the board, including a balance between race groups.
The R1 billion that the City spent in 2010 should be used to roll out this important service, as a matter of urgency.
