Public Protector's full Nkandlagate report must be made public
I will today write to the Public Protector, Advocate Madonsela, to request clarity as to whether the full and unexpurgated Nkandlagate report will be made public.
Last night, Adv Madonsela publically confirmed that the investigation into the upgrade of President Jacob Zuma's private home in Nkandla is now complete. However, her office is uncertain about who the report should go to as there currently is no oversight body for the Presidency.
While we appreciate Adv Madonsela's dilemma in this regard, this report cannot be delayed by the government's disregard of accountability measures. The Nkandlagate report will shed light on one of the biggest corruption scandals in President Zuma's administration. It is both in the public interest and in the interest of accountability and transparency to ensure that the full and unexpurgated report is made public.
I will furthermore recommend in my correspondence to Adv. Madonsela that in the absence of an appropriate oversight body over the Presidency, that the report be tabled before the Portfolio Committee on Public Works in Parliament.
I will also query whether I will be receiving a provisional report, as has been the protocol followed in the past. Indeed in other Public Protector investigations requested by the DA, a provisional copy is sent to the requesting party. This, for example, has been the protocol followed with the ICT Indaba investigation.
