R1,5bn underspend: Gauteng finance responds

Dept says it will only be able to comment once report is tabled

MEDIA RELEASE BY GAUTENG DEPARTMENT OF FINANCE ON ALLEGED UNDEREXPENDITURE OF R1.5-BILLION BY THE GAUTENG PROVINCIAL GOVERNMENT IN 2010/2011 FINANCIAL YEAR

23 May 2011

The Gauteng Department of Finance (GDF) has noted comments by the leader of the Democratic Alliance in the Legislature Mr Jack Bloom, that the Gauteng Provincial Government failed to spend a total of R1.5-billion in the previous financial year. According to Mr Bloom this information is contained in the department's 2010/2011 Fourth Quarter Report.

Unfortunately GDF is not in a position to comment on any information in this report before it is formally presented to the Finance Portfolio Committee - a Committee that exercise oversight on any work related to the department.

GDF remains committed to transparency. As such we will engage openly and honestly with the media on any matters that fall under its mandate provided that proper procedures were followed in obtaining and releasing it to the public.
