Radovan Krejcir hands himself over - SAPS

Czech fugitive arrested on fraud charges, being questioned on Cyril Beeka shooting

GAME OVER FOR KREJCIR

Czech fugitive Radovan Krejcir's days on the run are over. Krejcir handed himself over to the Hawks in Johannesburg in the early hours of this morning, and was immediately detained. He was wanted on a charge of fraud relating to the R4.5 million rand claim he allegedly made true an insurance company after managing to obtain medical papers saying he had cancer. Mr Krejcir is also being questioned regarding the death of Cyril Beeka who was gunned down in a drive by shooting in Cape Town earlier this week.

The Hawks raided Mr Krejcir's house in Bedfortview on Tuesday night, but did not find him in his premises. We immediately extended an invitation to Mr Krejcir, to hand himself over - stressing that it was in his best interest to do so. Since then, Mr Krejcir played a cat and mouse game with law enforcement agencies. He made several appointments, promising to hand himself over - but repeatedly failed to do so.

Perhaps faced with no options and feeling the pressure applied by the Hawks through several franks including the media, he eventually handed himself over to head of the Hawks in Gauteng, Lt General Shadrack Sibiya through his lawyer in the early hours of this morning.

The SAPS management, led by National Commissioner, General Bheki Cele would like to thank members of the public who phoned and offered assistance regarding Mr Krejcir's possible whereabouts. We also extend a warm thank you to those who cheered us on through Facebook, and even those who used newspaper websites to criticize us for perceived mistakes in the search for Mr Krejcir. More importantly, thank you to the members who spent sleepless nights in the hunt for the Czech 42 year-old suspect.

Statement issued by Colonel McIntosh Polela, spokesperson for the SAPS, national media centre, March 25 2011
