Regression of Gauteng audit due to lack of good governance – Solly Msimanga

DA CL says audit outcomes show ANC-led govt is not capable of spending public funds wisely

Regression of Gauteng audit outcomes due to lack of good governance

20 November 2019

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Gauteng has noted today’s report released by Auditor-General (AG) Kimi Makwetu which showed that the Gauteng Provincial Government has regressed in terms of the percentage of clean audits it has received.

According to the AG, Gauteng only received a 30% clean audit for the 2018/2019 financial year, which is down from the 52% it received in 2017/2018 financial year.

The following departments regressed in terms of audit outcomes from the previous year:

Gauteng Provincial Legislature

Department of e-Government

Department of Economic Development

Department of Social Development

Gauteng IDZ Development Company SOC LTD

Cradle of Human Kind World Heritage Site

Gauteng Enterprise Propeller

Furthermore, the Department of Human Settlements and the Gauteng Housing Fund received a disclaimer.

These audit outcomes reflect that the ANC-led Gauteng government is not capable of spending public funds wisely as they have failed to reduce irregular, fruitless and wasteful expenditure in most of their departments.

There is a severe lack of consequence management, good governance and accountability within the Gauteng Provincial Government departments.

The Western Cape was the only province to maintain its clean audit outcome with 79% and continues the lead the country in terms of good governance.

The DA will be holding Premier David Makhura to account for this year’s audit outcomes as he has failed in his core mandate to ensure good governance in this province.

We call on Premier Makhura to explain why the province has regressed and what measures will be put in place to ensure that these audit outcomes improve in the next financial year.
