Resignation of US Ambassador to South Africa welcomed – EFF

Fighters say Reuben Brigety’s tenure was characterized by typical arrogance and paternalistic behaviour of US officials

EFF statement on the resignation of the US Ambassador to South Africa

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) notes the resignation of the United States of America's ambassador to South Africa, Reuben Brigety, as his tenure comes to an end alongside the presidency of Joe Biden. His departure marks the conclusion of a controversial and tension-filled chapter in the relationship between South Africa and the United States.

Ambassador Brigety's tenure was characterised by the typical arrogance and paternalistic behaviour of US officials, deeply rooted in their imperialist mindset. His time in office was marked by repeated violations of diplomatic norms and an attitude that sought to undermine South Africa's sovereignty.

The ambassador's baseless allegations of South Africa supplying arms to Russia during the ongoing conflict in Ukraine caused immense damage to our nation's reputation and currency stability. The Rand plummeted, trade relations with key allies were strained, and South Africa's credibility on the global stage was jeopardised.

Despite categorical denials from both South Africa and Russia, Brigety stubbornly clung to his accusations, damaging his relationship with the South African government.

His reckless claims also threatened South Africa's participation in trade partnerships worth billions, further endangering the country's economy. It is deeply telling that, even as calls for his recall grew louder, Brigety chose to remain in his position, prioritising political grandstanding over genuine diplomatic engagement.

While we do not expect any different from the incoming ambassador in January 2025, the EFF calls on the incoming administration in Washington to ensure that any future ambassador sent to South Africa adheres to principles of mutual respect, non-interference, and genuine cooperation. Africa deserves partners, not overseers.
