ANC Statement on the suspension of Phiyega from the police service and appointment of the Chairperson of the IEC
14 October 2015
The ANC welcomes the decision of President Zuma to suspend the Commissioner of Police, Riah Phiyega who was given up until the end of September to make a submission why she must not be suspended as the National Commissioner of Police, to give way to an investigation on her suitability to hold the Office of the Police Commissioner. This decision will allow the board of inquiry appointed by President Zuma to look into allegations of misconduct against Phiyega.
This proves that President Zuma is resolute to pursue recommendations made by the Farlam Commission of Inquiry following the Marikana tragedy. We also welcome the appointment of the Acting National Commissioner, Lieutenant General Johannes Khomotso Phahlane. We believe his experience and service in South African Police Services will help him steer the organization until the matter is resolved.
We also use the this opportunity to welcome and congratulate the newly appointed Chairperson of the Independent Electoral Commission,IEC, Mr. Glen Mashinini. His expansive experience within the IEC puts him in good stead to lead the organization. We wish him success and effective tenure.
