Roodepoort Primary: 369 learners still absent from school – DA Gauteng

Khume Ramulifho says mediation panel established by MEC Panyaza Lesufi must act swiftly to resolve this situation

Roodepoort Primary: 369 learners still absent from school

24 August 2015

While 831 learners from Roodepoort Primary are today catching up on school work, 369 learners remain absent, despite temporary arrangements put in place to accommodate them at alternative schools.

This morning, DA City of Johannesburg Ward 71 Councillor, Gert Niemand and I visited Lufhereng Primary School, and were pleased that the majority of learners relocated from Roodepoort Primary had arrived.

It is deeply concerning however that 369 pupils are being denied education and are falling further behind with the current year’s curriculum.

The mediation panel established by Gauteng MEC for Education, Panyaza Lesufi, must act swiftly to resolve this situation before these learners fall further behind.

It is also vital that MEC Lesufi engage, and take action where necessary, against teachers who have failed to turn up at school as this seriously undermines learning and teaching.

The DA supports all efforts by the MEC, particularly the work of the mediation panel, to ensure that no child stays from school.
