Ruling declaring Electoral Act constitutional noted – ActionSA

Party says it will now focus on 2024 election campaign

ActionSA notes ruling by Constitutional Court on Electoral Act - will focus on 2024 election campaign

4 December 2023

ActionSA notes the outcome of the Constitutional Court ruling to declare the Electoral Act constitutional and rational, but that the signature requirement for independents to participate be reduced to 1,000 signatures.

While the ruling reduced the requirement for independents, it did not amend the requirement for parties not yet represented in the National Assembly (NA) or any provincial legislature. As this is ActionSA’s first National and Provincial Election, we are still required to seek the necessary signatures to contest.

Fortunately, ActionSA is on track to exceed the requirement, having already met the threshold in the majority of provinces.

As such we are ready to contest the ballot and that will be our primary focus going forward as we take our offer to South Africans across the country.

As a party which values electoral reform, ActionSA believes that the South African people should be able to elect their representatives directly to ensure accountability, which is unfortunately, sorely missing from our current electoral regime. We will therefore work, once elected to Parliament, to introduce legislation to ensure better accountability.

South Africa cannot risk delaying elections any longer as the ruling party should urgently be removed to fix South Africa and to put her back on a path of prosperity.

In the months to come, ActionSA will work tirelessly to achieve that goal by engaging with communities across the country. Our focus is steadfastly on the 2024 elections to ensure that we remove the ruling party from power and start the work to fix South Africa.
